You’ll catch me baking up something delicious in my kitchen on a weekly basis. There are often times I’m out of eggs, milk and butter yet still need to continue with my baking recipe because there isn’t any other choice. Did you know during the Great depression there were lots of cakes baked without eggs, milk and butter because they were so expensive. Today I’m showing you one of my favorite Chocolate Depression Cakes that you’ll be drooling over, seriously!
Chocolate Depression Cake
- 1 1/2 Cups flour (all-purpose)
- 3 Tbsp. cocoa (unsweetened)
- 1 Cup sugar (All purpose sugar – Granulated Pure Cane Sugar)
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. white vinegar
- 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
- 5 Tbsp. vegetable oil
- 1 Cup water
First you want to mix together your flour, cocoa powder, sugar, baking soda and salt in a greased 8″ square baking pan. In the mixture make 3 divets into the mixture and pour in your vinegar, vanilla and vegetable oil. Grab your water and pour all over the mix and mix together until everything is smooth and combined.
Bake on middle rack of oven for 35 minutes. Check with toothpick to make sure it comes out clean. Allow to cool before adding your favorite frosting. Once cooled apply the frosting around your entire cake and serve to all your family and friends.
