If you’ve been following my blog for a while you know that we love to do home projects by ourselves. Instead of paying people to do it, we find the joy in completing these projects together. Since we moved into our fixer upper home just about 2 years ago there was one area that hasn’t been finished and it was driving me crazy. In our tri-level home we have a downstairs bathroom that is meant for all our guests and it was a horrible bathroom! The previous owners believed in painting all walls yellow with gold texture overlay and having burgundy trim, doors, molding and everything else. We are making this home crisp and bright and the yellow and burgundy colors just had to go.

I knew I wanted to go with a gray color to give it a great, open look but was nervous I’d pick to dark of a gray or maybe to late. It was a very small bathroom and I wanted to make sure it was done right the first time. I was so excited when I learned I was going to be working with Dunn-Edwards Paint and I immediately set up my appointment to go meet with the Professional Color Advisor, Jeanette. Before I left for my appointment I wanted to make sure I had a piece of the bamboo flooring we were putting in, pictures of the bathroom before and the new vanity we were putting in! I made sure I was prepared. When I arrived we talked about the type of colors I wanted in that bathroom and I geared towards a gray and white. She pulled out all the swatches that went well with my flooring and vanity and we decided on the color Covered in Platinum for the walls and Ultra White for the trim!

I felt very confident in my color choice but was advised to take home a sample to paint my wall and see how I loved the color over the next 24 hours! Right now Dunn-Edwards has a coupon that allows you to get a free paint sample for this very purpose!! As soon as I got home I painted a swatch on the wall and was instantly in love! The color was perfect! As soon as the weekend hit my husband and I got to work on the bathroom.
The paint we used was the Dunn-Edwards EVEREST (interior) paint and I absolutely love it. It comes with self-priming, virtually no odor and comes in gloss levels: Flat, Velvet, Eggshell and Semi-Gloss! We went with the semi-gloss since it was in a bathroom.
First we removed everything from the walls, removed the sink and had a blank canvas to work with. We used spackle to cover all the holes and indents in the wall (one bad thing about this house is the walls are made of plaster which means every time you remove something the wall crumbles!) We used sand paper to sand down the edges where the trim and door were painted burgundy so that painting was easier. Once the spackle was dry we placed tape around the floor and covering the window to ensure we didn’t get paint anywhere we didn’t want it. Next we used the Dunn Edwards Paint primer and painted the walls to get them ready for paint. We allowed it to dry over night.
Saturday came and I was so ready to get the Covered in Platinum paint on the walls. We used a roller and a paint tray and went to town. The paint covered in just one coat and looked absolutely beautiful, the color was perfect!! Our experience using Dunn Edwards paint was an amazing one and I can’t wait to tackle our next paint project in our home!
