DIY Kids Leggings

April 1, 2016 by Brittany 1 Comment

Ever since I had my daughter Madison back in 2013 I have been obsessed with the adorable little leggings for her. Now that she is 2 it’s even more fun to dress here up and get her ready for the day. One of the things I love doing is sewing my own DIY Kids Leggings so we can pick our own fun patterns and create our own outfits. These DIY Kids Leggings are so easy to make and are perfect for babies as young as 6 months and as old as 4 years of age.

DIY Kids Leggings

What you need:

Simplicity 1724- sizes 1/2-4
Sewing scissors
Stretch jersey knit fabric
Sewing pins
Sewing machine
Measuring tape
3/4″ elastic

Directions:

1. This pattern only has one pattern piece to cut out for leggings (which makes it super easy)
2. Fold your fabric in half and measure pattern piece distance from ends of arrows to folded side of material (to make sure your pattern is even) and make sure you have the same measurement (the number isn’t as important as the evenness of the fabric)
3. Pin pattern in place and cut our your desired size (if you are making more than one, cut out largest pattern first) and make sure you cut out all small arrows or points along edges of pattern
4. When you are done cutting out the one pattern piece, you will separate the material into two separate legs or pieces
5. Pin each leg by folding over wrong sides out
6. Sew each seem down both legs
7. Turn one leg right side out and slide it into the other leg
8. Pin both legs of the crotch together
9. Sew the crotch together
10. Turn your pants inside out
11. Fold the waist over 1″ twice, pin, and sew but leave a 2″ opening for elastic
12. Fold the hem on both legs over 1/2″ twice, pin, and sew
13. Look at pattern and see how much elastic you will need for your size leggings you are making
14. Attach a safety pin to you elastic and slide into the opening you left in the waist of your leggings
15. Slide your elastic all the way through
16. Pin and sew the elastic ends together (don’t sew onto the leggings)
17. Close up your waist opening by folding the top over 1″ twice and sew shut
18. Turn your leggings right side out
